3 Month Countdown to IGR #PrideInRugby Anniversary Weekend Begins

This event is designed to create the world’s biggest PR opportunity our community has ever seen, to promote and celebrate gay and inclusive rugby on the global stage in the middle of the Rugby World Cup!

This October marks the start of IGR’s 20th Anniversary year and to get this year-long celebration off to a flying start, we are launching the IGR #PrideInRugby Anniversary Weekend, taking place from 4th – 6th October.

The theme for this year’s event is #PrideInRugby, the pride we have for our sport, our clubs, our global family and how Rugby has changed our lives over the past two decades. We want the spirit of Pride to come to life on our pitches, in our clubhouses, in our pubs and bars, to create a global message of celebration through Rugby that will stay with us throughout the coming 20th anniversary year.

We want to raise the profile of every single club through collective focus, creating something that will interest local and global press and media, right in the middle of the Rugby World Cup.

To create a starting point for your events, we are issuing all 100 clubs with this challenge: we challenge you to break a Guinness World Record!!! In September 2012, our very own Berlin Bruisers set the Guinness World Record for the most Rugby passes in 3 minutes. This record still stands today. This is a great way to galvanise your club around a single starting point, perfect for adding to your regular training sessions in readiness for the big Guinness World Record attempt day on Saturday 5th October. Full details of how to take part and the rules required are available below.

In addition to the record attempt, we invite you to bring your ‘A’ game to the weekend by creating accompanying promotional activities, such as inviting neighbouring Clubs for a mini tournament, inviting the press or media to your game, creating special #PrideInRugby socials, the possibilities are endless, as long as we are all calling out to the Rugby World at this time of global significance for our sport! A great list of ideas is also available below:

In return, IGR will actively promote your event as one of the many events we hope will be created for this fantastic #PrideInRugby initiative. The main hub for this information will be the new IGR Anniversary Facebook page.

The IGR Executive Committee will be also working with our press contacts to further promote the weekend.

So, the challenge is made and the countdown has begun! This is a fantastic opportunity for our community, an opportunity that only comes around every four years, so let’s take on this challenge and promote our sport and our IGR family with #PrideInRugby to the world this October.
