Swansea Vikings have announced a new name, becoming West Wales Vikings, reflecting the growing regional identity of the inclusive rugby club and the members who travel from across West Wales to be part of it.
The Vikings were founded in Swansea in 2015 and the city will remain the club’s home. The change is not about moving away from Swansea, but recognising how the club and its membership have developed over the past decade.
Why the Vikings are now West Wales Vikings
Since their inception, the Vikings have welcomed players from communities across West Wales. The new West Wales Vikings identity is intended to better represent those members while helping the club extend its rugby offering to more people throughout the region.
Announcing the change, the club said:
“Since 2015, we’ve welcomed many players from across West Wales and, to recognise their contributions, … we want to create a Vikings identity that better reflects our members while extending our rugby offerings to people across the region.”
The club summed up that ambition simply: whether someone is from Port Talbot or Pontyates, Penlan or Penybanc, Vikings rugby is open to them.
That inclusive approach remains at the heart of the newly named West Wales Vikings. The club welcomes people regardless of age, ability, experience or sexuality, providing opportunities to enjoy rugby within a supportive and inclusive environment.
Swansea remains the Vikings’ home
While the name has changed, the Vikings’ connection with Swansea has not. The club will continue to be based in the city, with the West Wales name giving its identity a wider reach that more accurately reflects the community it now serves.
For anyone already following or contacting the club, its existing website address and Facebook presence will remain unchanged for the time being as the Vikings transition to their new West Wales identity.
A new name, the same home and the same commitment to inclusive rugby: West Wales Vikings.
